Music Therapy works for many types of people, from people with Autism Spectrum Disorders to Mental Illness and tons of others. A professional includes consumers in song selection and helps their client create music. Many areas of functioning are addressed in other areas of his life, for example social, cognitive, physical, etc.

My only anecdotal research experience is within a community of Methodists worship singing in praise of the Lord. My congregation doesn't talk to me about sins, and I socialize just a little in fellowship and some fundraisers wanting more fun personally.

A consistent source of rotating playlist, some songs I never heard of, keep me stable and safe from feeling depression. This wholesome good spirit guides through reading lyrics on a big screen with the crowd of membership. I am less moved emotionally in security by the churchly joys and concerns of community or the sermons I can hear and remember from the Minister's notes which I appreciate.
